Hot stone massages relax the body and calm the mind and spirit. The service is one of several different massages Naples Laser and MedSpa offers at its Bonita Springs and Naples locations.
You’ve probably guessed that in a hot stone massage, the massage therapist places warmed stones on your body as an addition to a regular therapeutic massage. However, there are a few things you might not know about hot stone massage.
The use of hot stone massage to relieve pain and stress is not a new massage therapy. Verbal and written history supports the notion the Chinese used heated stones to improve organ function more than 2,000 years ago.
Native Americans often used hot stones as part of sweat lodge practices, placing stones on women’s abdomens to ease menstrual cramps. Hawaiians also used hot stones for various healing practices.
Hot Stone Massages
Hot stone massages do not just use any old stone found in the garden or along the beach. Most hot stone massages use polished and hardened basalt stones, which retain heat much longer than a typical stone. They feel smooth and wonderful on the skin.
During a hot stone massage, the therapist heats as many as 50 basalt stones to 120–140º F, rubs them over your oiled body, and strategically places them on top of and beneath you on trigger points along the body — the spots likely to experience pain and sprains.
These areas can include the hand, toes, stomach, back, and neck. Some consider these spots the energy centers of the body.
Muscles that are tight and tense prove much harder to penetrate during a massage. By placing these stones along the tense spots in your body, the muscles loosen and relax, thereby allowing your massage therapist to really heal, lengthen, and soothe those areas without greatly increasing the pressure of the massage. Essentially, the warmed stones allow your massage therapist to do his or her job more readily and effectively while still maintaining your greatest comfort.
The therapist will leave some of the smooth, heated massage stones in contact with your body and use others to massage you. Cold stones are sometimes incorporated, especially on the face, where they have a firming effect.
Another benefit of hot stone massage therapy is that it helps calm the mind. It helps you go into a state of deep meditation.
The heat of the stones should never be too hot or uncomfortable. Talk to your therapist to get the most out of your experience.
